Defendants in ₦300m Illegal Eviction Case Ask Court to Delay Arraignment as Settlement Talks Progress
At Wednesday’s resumed hearing in Abuja, senior counsel Ahmed Raji SAN told the court that settlement talks are at an advanced stage in the ₦300 million illegal eviction and property damage suit. He urged the judge to defer arraignment pending final agreement and assured compliance with any terms reached. Prosecuting counsel Adorenke Imana raised concerns over the defendants’ sincerity, pointing to fresh motions filed by the second defendant, Victor Giwa, which suggest parallel litigation despite settlement claims. The trial judge, Hon. Justice Samira Bature, vacated the bench warrant against Giwa but ordered it to remain in force against a police inspector who failed to appear. The court praised the senior advocate’s credibility while cautioning all parties to conduct themselves properly. The matter is now adjourned until June 25 for further settlement updates and proceedings.
