Can High Voter Turnout Make Election Rigging More Difficult?

High voter turnout can make elections harder to manipulate because more citizens are available to monitor polling units, protect results and hold parties accountable. The Osun governorship election is a clear example. Ademola Adeleke won with 511,067 votes, while the APC candidate received 444,815 votes—a margin of 66,252 votes. The result has renewed debate about whether strong turnout and party structures can limit the impact of vote buying and other electoral malpractice. As Nigeria looks towards 2027, citizens should register, vote and remain vigilant throughout the electoral process. Political apathy only gives more room to those who benefit when voters stay away.
