Pape Gueye Threatens Senegal Boycott Over Coaching Staff

Pape Gueye Threatens Senegal Boycott Over Coaching Staff

Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye has announced he will take a break from the national team while the current coaching staff remains in place. The 27-year-old made the declaration on his social media following their 3-2 extra-time loss to Belgium in the World Cup round of 32. Gueye criticised head coach Pape Thiaw’s technical team and said he won’t return until changes are made. He was substituted shortly after the hour mark when Senegal led 2-0, but Belgium rallied through Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans to pull off a shock comeback. The breakdown after Senegal conceded two goals in two-and-a-half minutes has raised fresh questions over team management as preparations begin for World Cup 2026 qualifiers.

What do you think will prompt Senegal's coaching staff to resign before Gueye considers returning to the national team?

It's odd that a single player's protest can disrupt a national squad so soon after a narrow World Cup exit.

Perhaps the federation should set clear feedback channels between players and coaches to address concerns before losing key talent.
