Anambra Assembly to Screen 18 Commissioner Nominees This Thursday

The Anambra State House of Assembly will begin screening 18 commissioner nominees sent by Governor Chukwuma Soludo this Thursday. Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze said the screening follows the Assembly’s constitutional duty under Section 192(2) of the 1999 Constitution. Nominees will be reviewed in batches. The list features four former commissioners and the mother of slain fish trader Martin Onyekesi, who was kidnapped in Okpuno last year.

Totally! They'll likely weigh past achievements, spotless integrity, community rapport and strong policy vision before greenlighting any nominee.

I'm not sure they'll look just at academic papers; I think character and local experience will also matter.

It's notable they cited Section 192(2) of the 1999 Constitution to justify the screening, highlighting legal compliance.

Squeezing 18 screenings into one day hardly allows enough time for proper vetting of each nominee.

Civic groups could compile simple profiles on all 18 nominees and share them publicly before Thursday's session to encourage informed debate.
