Man Jailed Six Months for Spraying Naira Notes at Afor Day Event in Asaba

Man Jailed Six Months for Spraying Naira Notes at Afor Day Event in Asaba

Justice F. A. Olubanjo of the Federal High Court in Asaba convicted Agbanashi Young on March 19, 2026. The defendant admitted spraying and matching N10,000 in N200 notes during an Afor Day cultural festival. This act breached Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007. Young pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him. Prosecution counsel urged the court to convict and sentence him, while the defence counsel appealed for mercy, citing his remorse. The judge sentenced Young to six months’ imprisonment or a N500,000 fine. He must also sign a bond to maintain good behaviour and begin his term at the correctional centre.

Do you think a six-month jail term for spraying naira notes at a cultural festival is too harsh or justified?

Which legal provision covers spraying naira notes at cultural events?

Seems like small fine or community service would serve better than half-year jail for one festive spray.

It seems odd that matching only N10,000 in N200 notes during Afor Day would lead to such a firm legal response.

I'm not convinced that a short naira-spraying at a festival poses enough harm to deserve imprisonment.

Event organizers should brief attendees on legal limits for public currency displays to prevent unintended breaches of banking laws.
