Taraba to Upgrade Takum College of Health Technology to Polytechnic for TETFund Access

Taraba to Upgrade Takum College of Health Technology to Polytechnic for TETFund Access

Taraba State has begun plans to restructure the College of Health and Technology, Takum, into a polytechnic so it can qualify for TETFund support. Governor Agbu Kefas said the state would amend the laws establishing the institution, which is currently classified as a monotechnic and therefore ineligible for the intervention fund. He cited the Taraba College of Agriculture, Jalingo, which became eligible for TETFund after a similar reform. The governor also highlighted reduced tuition fees, accreditation funding, improved infrastructure, staff recruitment and new academic programmes across state-owned tertiary institutions. The announcement came during the college's first convocation since its establishment in 1993, after more than 30 graduating sets.

What changes would Takum students and staff likely notice first if the college is formally restructured into a polytechnic?

I agree, though the bigger change may be how the institution presents itself and what opportunities the new status could unlock.

The planned legal amendment shows this is more than a name change; the state is positioning the institution for TETFund support.

TETFund access sounds useful, but upgrading the label alone will not solve every need unless the restructuring is properly implemented.

Clear timelines for the law amendment, accreditation steps, and how existing students will be affected would make the plan easier to assess.
