Australian Court Fines X AU$650,000 for Ignoring Child Safety Orders
An Australian federal court has upheld a penalty of AU$650,000 against X for failing to comply with child internet safety regulations. The action follows a demand by the national online safety regulator in February 2023 for details on how the platform would tackle child sexual abuse material. After Twitter rebranded to X, regulators said the company provided incomplete responses to repeated information requests. A previous federal court ruling in October 2024 had already ordered X to comply with the safety notice. On May 21, Federal Justice Michael Wheelahan imposed a near-maximum fine to ensure the penalty acts as a real deterrent rather than just a business cost. Australia’s strict new social media laws also bar under-16s from using major platforms. Other countries are reportedly considering similar measures after discussions with Australian officials.
