DSS Clears and Releases Carpenter Arrested Over Oriire School Attack
The Department of State Services has released Mustapha Marwana, a carpenter arrested over the May 15 attack on schools in Oriire, Oyo State, after investigators found no evidence connecting him to the crime or the Ansaru terrorist group. The attack led to the abduction of 39 pupils and seven teachers. Two victims were later killed, while the remaining victims regained their freedom on July 10 after a military operation. A security source said a DSS review found no evidence that Marwana was involved in the group’s membership, financing, logistics or operations. The agency reportedly paid him an initial ₦3 million to support his immediate needs and help him restart his livelihood. The source added that the DSS has paid more than ₦300 million in compensation to people cleared after investigations since the current director-general assumed office.
