Should Tinubu Reverse Subsidy Removal to Ease Nigerians’ Pain?
No one disputes that removing petrol, electricity and forex subsidies has driven up living costs for rich and poor alike. Yet President Tinubu’s team insists we focus on how governors spend the windfall from the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee. This policy shift should improve welfare, as our Constitution demands. Instead, many governors splurge on ostentatious projects and ignore critical infrastructure like power, roads and refineries. State revenues have surged, but poverty figures are also soaring. If governors misuse these funds, perhaps subsidies are the only direct way to help Nigerians cope with skyrocketing prices. Reversing the policy would challenge current revenue allocations and global financial partners—but it could deliver immediate relief to millions.
