FG Drops UTME Requirement for NCE, Agriculture Non-Engineering Admissions

FG Drops UTME Requirement for NCE, Agriculture Non-Engineering Admissions — 1 of 4
1 / 4

The Federal Government has announced that candidates seeking admission into Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and agriculture-related non-engineering programmes will no longer need to sit the UTME. Under the new policy, applicants need only a minimum of four O-level credits in their school certificate to qualify for these courses. The change was unveiled by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, at the JAMB 2026 policy meeting in Abuja. This move aims to ease the yearly strain on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, which processed over 2.2 million UTME candidates for 2026—up 10.5% from 2025. It aligns these entry requirements with other non-degree programmes already based solely on O-level results. JAMB will soon provide further details on how placements into colleges of education and agriculture non-engineering programmes will be coordinated under the new guidelines.

I'm not convinced that a few credits alone can truly replace the comprehensive insight UTME gave into candidate strengths and weaknesses.

Applicants should focus on maintaining strong O-level grades and gather supplemental recommendations to strengthen their admission profiles under the new policy.
