Cheat Sheet: Convert Miles, Fahrenheit & Pounds on Your Next Trip

Every Nigerian who travels abroad faces familiar questions. Is 75°F hot or cold? How fast is 60 mph in km/h? Am I over the 50 lbs luggage limit when I packed 23 kg? Here’s a quick guide to the units in key destinations: United Kingdom: miles and mph for roads; Celsius for temperature; mixed weight measurements. United States: miles and mph; Fahrenheit everywhere; pounds and ounces for weight. Canada: km/h for roads; Celsius; metric officially, but imperial used informally. Europe: fully metric—km, °C, and kg. Handy conversions to memorise: 0 °C = 32 °F; 20 °C ≈ 68 °F (×2 + 30 is a quick estimate). 1 mile = 1.6 km; 1 kg = 2.2 lbs. US gallon = 3.79 L; UK gallon = 4.55 L. I also use a free converter app on my phone for instant results—no signup required. It handles temperature, distance and weight. Do you have your own shortcuts when travelling?

Eyeballing by lifting under your arm? Cute idea, but I'd rather not gamble on overweight fees.

It's interesting the sheet focuses on UK metrics while many Nigerians travel to the US and EU as well.

I'm not sure converting units on the fly beats just memorizing rough equivalents before departure.

Always tare your bag first, then add items gradually so you no go exceed the 50 lbs limit at check-in.
