Security Analyst Demands Transparency After Reports of Terror Suspects Returning from Hajj
A security expert has raised serious concerns over Nigeria’s intelligence and screening procedures after reports emerged that suspected terrorists were arrested upon their return from the Hajj pilgrimage. In a recent interview on a current affairs radio programme, the convener of a Katsina security group challenged authorities to confirm or refute allegations that bandit commanders travelled to Mecca and were possibly sponsored by state governments. He noted conflicting statements from the state security commissioner and the Minister of Interior on the arrests at Katsina airport. The analyst questioned how individuals linked to terrorism could navigate the multi-stage Hajj registration, authentication and orientation process without detection if security protocols were effective. He warned that such lapses could expose Nigeria to greater threats and urged an immediate, nationwide review of pilgrim screening. Reflecting on the evolution of banditry, he described how local criminal networks now collaborate with extremist groups. He recounted a recent kidnapping that left a nurse’s family traumatized and called for stronger intelligence-driven operations to dismantle these networks.
