Oklahoma Landlord Charged with Manslaughter after Shooting Squatter
On May 1, a 59-year-old Oklahoma City landlord and his daughter went to inspect one of his vacant homes. They found a man, identified as Justin King, inside with a woman. An argument broke out and the landlord fired a single shot, striking King in the neck. King survived for over a week before being removed from life support on May 8. The landlord was first charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon. After King’s death, prosecutors upgraded the charge to first-degree manslaughter and added reckless conduct with a firearm. He is held on a $25,000 bond. Defense attorneys say the landlord will argue self-defense. They note that state law may treat an occupied home differently from a vacant property. They also point out that no death penalty exists for trespassing in Oklahoma.
