Don’t Rely on Tinubu, Amaechi Warns: ADC Must Unite Around a Strong 2027 Candidate

Don’t Rely on Tinubu, Amaechi Warns: ADC Must Unite Around a Strong 2027 Candidate

At the ADC national convention in Abuja, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi urged party members to rally behind a viable candidate for the 2027 elections. He warned that President Tinubu has no intention of ceding power voluntarily. Amaechi criticized government attempts to block opposition gatherings and questioned their constitutional right to assemble. He accused the administration of paying lip service to democracy while undermining it. He highlighted the worsening security crisis and condemned officials for looting public funds with impunity. He noted the widespread killings, displacements, and abductions under the current leadership. He closed by calling on ADC stakeholders to close ranks and present a united front if they hope to end the ruling party’s grip on power in 2027.

It's interesting that Amaechi frames the ADC's success entirely on unity and a single strong candidate, as if internal divisions are the only obstacle.

I'm not sure Tinubu really plans to cling to power indefinitely; even strong incumbents sometimes negotiate transitions quietly.

ADC members should start local outreach and consensus-building now, mapping potential candidates' strengths and addressing grassroots concerns well before 2027.
