IAUOE VC Channels Book Fundraising into New Peace Institute

IAUOE VC Channels Book Fundraising into New Peace Institute — 1 of 3
1 / 3

When leadership is rooted in service, its impact shines far beyond titles. This was evident when colleagues, former students and well-wishers honoured IAUOE Vice-Chancellor Prof. Okey Onuchukwu with a commemorative volume celebrating his scholarship and mentorship. The event raised millions of naira in donations. In a rare act of selflessness, Prof. Onuchukwu pledged every kobo back to his university. He directed the proceeds to complete the Okey Onuchukwu Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies on the Rumuolumeni Campus, now over 90 percent finished. This gesture has been hailed as a landmark example of Individual Social Responsibility. Many say such dedication could reshape Nigeria’s higher education sector through stronger infrastructure and a more vibrant academic environment.

It's impressive to honour Professor Onuchukwu, but I wonder if turning a celebratory volume into fundraising shifts the focus from academic recognition.

While the VC's service is commendable, focusing on book fundraising seems like a convenient excuse rather than a direct investment in lasting peace projects.
