Akpabio: Failing to Protect Our Children Threatens Nigeria’s Future
Senate President Godswill Akpabio opened plenary after the Sallah recess in Abuja under the mournful shadow of the recent abductions of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State. He called the attacks an assault on the nation’s collective humanity and warned that if Nigeria cannot safeguard its children, it imperils its own future. Akpabio named two educators, Michael Oyedokun and Adesiyan Adegboye, who died during the incident, and mourned a child whose life was cut short. He appealed for unity across party, faith, and ethnic lines, urged Nigerians to resist political exploitation of tragedy, and backed every lawful measure to strengthen security and rescue those still held captive. He reminded lawmakers they are custodians of the hopes and aspirations of all Nigerians and must act with dignity. He also congratulated political parties on recent primaries, noting that above individual victories stands the greater triumph of democracy itself.
