INEC to Study Verdict After Court Voids 2027 Election Timelines
A Federal High Court in Abuja has nullified INEC’s timetable for party primaries and candidate nominations ahead of the 2027 general election. The court ruled that sections 29, 82 and 84(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026 do not empower INEC to set or shorten timelines for parties. The suit was filed by the Youth Party in March 2026 against INEC as the sole defendant. In his judgment, Justice Mohammed Umar declared that INEC cannot prescribe deadlines for submitting membership registers or candidate particulars. INEC’s director of voter education and publicity said the commission has not yet received the full judgment. She confirmed INEC will study the verdict thoroughly before deciding on its next steps.
