Maitama Court Admits Newspaper Reports in Emefiele’s Naira Redesign Trial
On Monday, the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama admitted several certified newspaper publications as fresh evidence against former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele in his ongoing trial over the naira redesign policy. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission tendered copies of reports from The Punch, ThisDay, Vanguard, Daily Sun and The Nation, along with receipts showing payment for the papers. A National Library official certified the documents but clarified that he was not their author and only verified their authenticity. Emefiele faces four counts alleging due process violations in the redesign and printing of new naira notes, a policy that triggered nationwide cash shortages and long bank queues. His counsel raised no objection to the new evidence and the case was adjourned to continue at a later date.
