From Banking Grad to UK Care Worker: My Japa Journey and What I Wish I Knew
I graduated with a Banking and Finance degree in 2023 but felt Nigeria couldn’t offer the opportunities I wanted. A friend in the UK guided me to a Health and Care Worker visa sponsored by an employer. I spent seven months and about £1,500 on visa fees and flight costs before arriving. Life in the UK has been rewarding and structured. The cold weather, reliable power, orderly roads and public transport surprised me most. Food banks, 24/7 electricity and security stand in stark contrast to home. Work as a carer has been fulfilling, and my colleagues are supportive. Downsides include high taxes, long waits for medical appointments and the constant reminder that this isn’t my home. I miss my family, Nigerian food and the freedom of my country. My advice: research the visa steps yourself or with someone experienced, prepare to be patient, and go to your interview ready to explain your purpose clearly. Don’t expect to get rich in year one, but trust the process.
