Stakeholders Warn New Telecom and Fuel Levies Could Fuel Inflation
Experts caution that planned taxes on telecommunications and fuel services may worsen hardship and drive up prices across Nigeria. A News Agency report from Abakaliki records that tax administrator Chukwuemeka Nwankwo urged caution on levies for vital services. Ebonyi State Revenue Board’s Ngozi Eze said telecoms and fuel are necessities that underpin business, education, and daily life. Legal experts stressed that any new tax proposals must follow the National Assembly’s process. Economist Samuel Nwali warned that higher fuel taxes, especially after subsidy removal, could push inflation even higher. Professor Chinonso Ezeh and traders at Kpiri-Kpiri Market added that heavier telecom and fuel levies may harm digital inclusion and raise consumer costs. They called on the government to boost social protection schemes and tackle living-cost pressures before introducing new charges.
