Senate Approves Constitutional Amendment to Create State Police
The Senate has passed a constitutional amendment bill to establish state police services alongside the federal force. Lawmakers adopted all 26 clauses during a committee of the whole sitting on Wednesday. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele described the bill as one of Nigeria’s most significant post-1999 reforms. It would preserve the federal police for national security roles while allowing states to set up forces under national standards. Opposition Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and Senator Aminu Tambuwal urged safeguards against political abuse and clear funding paths. For the amendment to take effect, at least two-thirds of state assemblies must ratify it before presidential assent.
