Court Upholds CBN’s Exclusive eNaira Trademark, Orders Firm to Rebrand
The Federal High Court in Abuja has affirmed that the Central Bank of Nigeria is the sole owner of the eNaira trademark, rejecting a claim from a private payments company. Justice James Omotosho granted a perpetual injunction barring eNaira Payment Solutions Limited from using “eNaira” in its name or branding. The firm must adopt a new corporate identity that does not include the word “Naira.” This ruling settles a dispute over the branding of Nigeria’s official digital currency, launched by the Central Bank to modernize payment systems and promote financial inclusion.
