Anglican Bishop Urges Government to Arm Vigilante Groups Amid Rising Insecurity
Rt. Rev. Dr. Olufemi Familoni, Bishop of the Anglican Missionary Diocese of Oyo South, urged the Federal Government to equip local vigilante outfits with modern weapons. He spoke after an ordination service, warning that banditry, kidnappings and killings have become unbearable across the country. The bishop highlighted the success of Amotekun and other community security groups in reducing crime in parts of the South-West. He called for more training, sophisticated equipment and strong political will to enable these groups to pursue criminals in forests and remote areas effectively. While commending recent police and military operations, he stressed that conventional forces are overstretched and need the support of well-equipped local vigilantes. He also appealed for urgent action to rescue kidnapped students and teachers in Oyo State and cautioned against politicising matters of security.
